The Heritage Trail

The small town of Sunderland became famous for it's ship building and industry which made it the city it is today.

Sunderland has a rich history that encompasses poverty and riches.  It was always a hard working town, famous for it's heavy industry.  That background bred people who were resilient and hardy, but who were also able to appreciate the finer things such as our beautiful country side and architecture.

Coastal Heritage Trail

Sunderland is famous for its wonderful sea front, famous for sea bathing and spa, with Hendon, Roker, Seaburn and Whitburn beaches popular today.

The coast has been a key feature of Sunderland and the river was undoubtedly key in establishing the town.  The river delta developed into the harbour and port, shipping coal and providing ships for the nation.  Industries have come and gone over the centuries but the coast remains at the heart of Sunderland.
