Location 8: Pottery Bank

As we progress east we come to the site of the Pottery Buildings and North Moor Street. This was the Street where Jack Crawford lived and his house was at the east end of the street. From the end of North Moor Street you could look down upon the South Dock entrance over to Greenwell’s Dry Dock and Oil Tanks. These Oil Tanks were hit during an air raid in the Second World War. They caught fire and the heat from them was tremendous. The South Docks construction was started in 1846 and they were opened in 1850. During the construction of the Docks, at the entrance, a Roman Pottery was found below the surface hewn out of limestone. Four perfect specimens of Roman Bottles were found along with quantities of Red and Yellow Ochre pottery ware.

Sunderland (Garrison) Pottery, was reputedly established as early as 1753, right on the river bank. The Barracks would later be built just behind (hence its later name Garrison.)
The use of 'lustre' on pottery produced by The Sunderland Pottery would seem to have commenced in the early 1800's.
